Semantic and pragmatic features of modal verbs in English media discourse during the first year of the Russian-Ukrainian war (based on «The Guardian»)

The article examines the functional features of modal verbs as instruments of influence in high-quality English-language press. Based on a corpus of texts from the British edition "The Guardian" during the first year of the full-scale Russian-Ukrainian war, a comprehensive analysis of the semantic and pragmatic potential of modal units is conducted. It is established that modality in war-period media texts transcends purely grammatical meanings, transforming into a mechanism for constructing strategic narratives. Five functional-semantic groups of modal verbs are identified and analysed: prediction, probability, intention, ability, and obligation. Quantitative analysis demonstrates the dominance of epistemic modality, indicating the priority of analytical forecasting and modelling future scenarios over a direct imperative.
