Language innovations of war: Ukrainian military neosemantisms and their translation into German

This article deals with a comprehensive study of Ukrainian military neosemanticisms within the professional jargon of military service members and outlines strategies for their translation from Ukrainian into German. The purpose of the research is to identify the mechanisms of semantic derivation and the pragmatic parameters of these units’ functioning, and to determine optimal ways of rendering them in German. The empirical base is a corpus of 79 lexical items. It is established that neosemantisation is one of the leading channels of renewal in the military sociolect: formally stable forms acquire new meanings via metaphor (by external resemblance, by function, by manner of action), abbreviation-based derivation, and numerical coding. Thematically, the inventory is dominated by names of weapons, munitions, and equipment (23 items; 29.1%), designations of persons (18 items; 22.8%), and names of military vehicles and transport (14 items; 17.7%); smaller clusters include clothing (5 items; 6.3%) and everyday life (3 items; 3.8%). The study shows that imagery (figurative meaning) is a key pragmatic characteristic performing a functional role. Metaphorical transfers provide cognitive transparency while simultaneously imparting expressive–evaluative marking, thereby strengthening the in-group code. In translation, the most frequent solutions are neutral dictionary equivalents, approximate and descriptive renderings; transcription/transliteration and calquing preserve cultural markers but narrow the circle of addressees.
